New SoundCloud tracks – sleeping dogs lie and cold afternoon

I recently uploaded two tracks to SoundCloud.
The new track is "sleeping dogs lie":

I had sat down to prepare for an upcoming gig, and this piece emerged as I set up all the gear. It sounded good, so I hit record and created the demo above.

I also added a track that was recorded a couple of years back, "cold afternoon":

It was originally intended for sound&fury's passeridae series of split 7"s, but tragically sound&fury's Adam D Mills took his own life before the series was completed. He was a beloved figure in the Australian experimental scene, and this track is dedicated to his memory.

Hit the SoundCloud logo to go to the song's page.
If you don't see anything, your browser might have a problem with the SoundCloud HTML5 widget. If so, clicking on the track names will also take you directly to the SoundCloud pages.

New track! Raven remixes Telafonica!

Telafonica EP
Now available is my remix of the lovely Sydney indietronic band Telafonica. I took all the parts except some vocals and replaced them with layers of cello and effects. Fun!

Video: recent performances

Recently I played a set at Cockatoo Island as part of a gig I curated called Postfolkrocktronica Picnic. I briefly played a set of my own, and then debuted an exciting new duo I've been working on with Ollie Bown of Icarus, using custom looping and processing software created by him and workshopped together.
We've got a ways to go, but there's a tremendous amount of potential for some really cool stuff there…

So, first up some solo Raven. This is (most of) a piece without a name that I created for the Goodbye Sarajevo event at this year's Sydney Writers' Festival.

And here's a possibly bewildering excerpt from the Bown/Hollo duo, sometime after Ollie dropped the tempo of the piece and warped everything. You can't really hear the way the beats are synchronised with the cello loops, but hopefully it's pretty at least:

Last-minute Raven – Jurassic Lounge Tuesday August 9th

I've been a bit slack with promoing this one, but on Tuesday evening coming, the 9th of August, I'm playing a live Raven set twice (45 minutes, then the same again later on) at the Jurassic Lounge at the Australian Museum.
The linked show outline says "Atrium DJ", but rest assured I'm playing live! Lots of cello+loops like the video in the previous post, and the usual laptop glitchiness as well — all with live visuals from Barry Saunders.

Video: Raven live at Pablo & Rusty's, Epping, 30.07.11

For those who missed last night's gig (see previous post), or who want to relive a little bit of it, Paul Threthni has posted some pics and also took this video of my last piece, an as-yet-unnamed loop pedal and cello piece:

It's missing the stupendous bass warmth and general wondrousness of the sound at the venue, but it's pretty good sounding for a camera video, and I'm glad to be able to present one of my newest pieces ‐ I'm pretty proud of it. Now for a name…

Utility Fog-curated gig featuring Raven – 30.07.11

The Gate flyer
I'm very excited to present the beautiful flyer above for a gig I have curated under the Utility Fog banner featuring Raven (as requested by Joe of The Gate) along with some of my favourite Australian musicians.
It's on Saturday the 30th of July, and features Gail Priest, Ollie Bown of Icarus, and a rare appearance in Sydney of Melbourne's Part Timer.
It'll be teh awes.

Joe has a great promo page over at The Gate site with some handy blurbs on the musicians. Note the location: 42 Langston Pl, Epping is basically right across from Epping Station. 25 minute train trip from Central Station. Get on it!

Home – a journey by DJ mix

Angela & I are becoming first home owners this week, and in celebration and amongst the madness of moving (boxes everywhere, last-minute delays, culling of vinyl and even *gasp* CDs), I've compiled a special DJ mix for the occasion.

I love making radio and I love creativeness, so DJ mixes are a natural for me. The last one I did was freeform in terms of theme, and I tried to give it a great flow despite great diversity.

There's certainly a lot of diversity here too. I've taken the theme of Home literally — it's 20(ish) tracks, every one of which has the word "Home" in its title. Other than starting with "Leaving Home" and ending with "Coming Home to the Sun", the flow is purely music-driven. I've allowed a lot of the songs to go pretty long, because it's meant to be a bit of a journey and it's entirely self-indulgent. Full tracklisting below.

Download it here:

Here's a slightly ugly way of playing in page via Mixcloud, because Soundcloud are waaaay too assiduous about pursuing copyright:

DJ mix for Micronations – "Nanostates"

I've done a DJ mix for Andrew Tuttle aka Anonymeye's Micronations mix series.
Unfortunately his hosting provider of choice, the redoutable Soundcloud, are watching over us, and refused to accept my mix because they recognize one of the (shortest) excerpts as copyrighted. Way to go. So you can download it instead from here:
Micronations mix series: Raven – Nanostates

And here's the blurb and tracklisting. Please enjoy and if you do, please spread the word!

Peter Hollo takes you on a world tour of his current musical listening – plus a few classics that slipped in because they sound so good.

Watch Raven live on Radio National!

A few weeks ago I was invited to appear on ABC Radio National's Breakfast show, which is being guest-hosted by Julian Morrow (of Chaser fame) over the summer, to discuss my "album of the year". As listeners to Utility Fog may guess, choosing one album is a matter of some existential pain for me, but I ended up nominating Sufjan StevensAge of Adz, which is just about radio friendly enough to suit a breakfast show :)

They also kindly asked me to bring my cello along, and even though I was perhaps there more as a representative of FourPlay than as Raven, I played a rendition of "It's too fucking hot, but we've still got melody". You can view it on their site, and it's also on their excellent YouTube channel:

I shortened the piece a bit for radio, but you get the idea. No laptop involved in this one, just looping. The full recorded version can be found on the stumble ep.

Raven on Radio National, Friday January 7th

ABC Radio National’s been taken over by the weirdos for the summer, and a wonderful thing it is! I got to go in to RN Breakfast a couple of weeks ago and talk to The Chaser's Julian Morrow, who's holding the seat warm for Fran Kelly over the summer break. I talked about my "favourite album of the year" — impossible to choose one, especially a breakfast-friendly one, but I did alright: listen here.

More importantly for the Raven-ous side of things, The Night Air has taken over the evenings for January (at least 8:30-10pm or something), and Brent Clough has invited me to play a set, so listen in around:
9pm, Friday January 7th
to hear Raven playing live on Radio National! I think I'll play about 3 tracks and have a chat as well.
